Traveling by Rail in Kenya: Kenya Railways is purchasing 7 locomotives for the Nairobi-Kisumu rail link in China, which will arrive in Kenya at the end of March.
The number of passengers on the rail route between the capital Nairobi and Kisumu is constantly increasing. As a result, Kenya Railways has now purchased seven more locomotives in China to be used on passenger services on the Nairobi-Kisumu route. A spokesman for Kenya Railways confirmed that the locomotives are expected to arrive in Kenya from China by the end of March 2022 and will then be deployed on the Nairobi-Kisumu route as early as April. Further information regarding the cost of the locomotives was not given.
And so Kenya Railways and a responsible government spokesman agree: The expansion of the connections between Nairobi and Kisumu will definitely offer many advantages for travelers. For example, in the future it will be possible to board the train from Kisumu at night, arrive in Nairobi in the morning and, if necessary, take the train back to Kisumu on the same day. This is not yet possible in this form.
The expansion of connections will also benefit tourism and other economic sectors. In the future, tourists will be able to reach and travel much more easily in western Kenya, for example Kisumu and the region around Lake Victoria, Mfangano Island or the Ruma National Park.
