The giraffe center in Lang’ata, a suburb of the capital, is less than 20 kilometers from the city center of Nairobi. Founded in 1979, the aim was to protect the endangered giraffe, especially the Rothschild giraffe, and to establish a giraffe breeding program. Just four years later, in 1983, the construction of the visitor center began in order to establish the giraffe center at the gates of the capital as a tourist destination.
